RVD, No. 17: Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands will receive the first copy of the photobook A World Without Cervical Cancer in Leiden on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
The book will be presented by Prof. Lex Peters, professor of Gynecology at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and founder of the Female Cancer Foundation.
Every two minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman dies of cervical cancer. 85% of the cases involve women from developing countries. Writer Patricia Jacob and photographer Chantal Spieard followed Prof. Dr. Lex Peters and documented the work of the Female Cancer Foundation in Indonesia, Africa and Bangladesh. With the book, the organization hopes to generate support to further reduce cervical cancer deaths worldwide.
The Female Cancer Foundation began in the late 1980s through collaboration between the Departments of Gynecology, Pathology and Immunohematology at LUMC. Since then, structural collaborations have been established with partners in Suriname, Africa and Indonesia. From 2007 to 2011, a preventive screening program was rolled out in which millions of men and women were educated and hundreds of thousands of women were screened and, if necessary, treated. Programs are now underway in Indonesia, Bangladesh and in five African countries.
During the book launch, local project staff from the Female Cancer Foundation will talk about the need to address this disease in their countries and the simple but effective treatments they offer women.
